▫️Stephen totilo has reported that game discs for PS5 can still be produced passed January 2028
▫️The catch is they have to be games that have released before then
▫️This means that game discs will continue to be produced for older titles passed 2028 for companies that want it PlayStation has now been AWOL for 3 days across X, BlueSky, Facebook and Instagram since making this tweet on ending physical disc games.
They also took a 72 hour break after shuttering Bluepoint.
Sony has not said anything in 3 days. It’s going to be interesting if they post anything Monday morning or go the rest of the week quiet.
Even days later the heat is still high on this topic and I see new tweets and posts on it still so I think Sony is going to have to be quiet for longer
Even then, once they post again that will be news and people will flock to the post to obliterate whatever they’re posting about

"If you’d hoped the backlash to Sony’s boneheaded decision to cease manufacturing game discs in 2028 could be reversed, a new report coming out of Austria makes it incredibly unlikely.
The write-up claims the company’s facility in Thalgau has been preparing for this transition for some time, and while the good news is it won’t result in layoffs, it sounds like PlayStation is very much committed to an all-digital future.
The report says that 600,000 discs roll off the Austrian assembly line right now, and PlayStation accounts for roughly 50 per cent of that. However, it anticipates that just 10 per cent of said orders will remain in 2028.
Anticipating this, it’s re-training staff and modifying equipment to switch to optical microlens manufacturing, with the transition already well underway.
Optical microlenses are used to focus and direct light in the smallest possible space, with “one application [being] a car turn signal that is projected onto asphalt”.
The worrying thing for fans hoping Sony changes course here is that employees are already being reassigned to the new technology now, meaning it’s highly unlikely this particular facility will be able to go back.
If planning around this has already been underway for several months, I think PlayStation may now be locked into this future, and that means no amount of external pressure is going to change the outcome."
So using such data is somewhat misleading.
To gauge REAL physical demand you need to look at splits of games that released both physical AND digital only. Thanks to the Insomniac leaks, we have such data on PS first party games.
"The idea that they could still buy a PlayStation 4 game, throw it in a machine and play was important. You don't want to leave those people behind."
"I don't know what went on in those conversations, but it's a fairly dramatic decision." Did a little research into this "85% of games bought on Playstation are digital". So I decided to look at the EXACT wording of what that meant.
Spoiler: Its not "Out of 100 copies of Spiderman sold, 85% are digital"
Here's how they calculate it.
Digital Units sold, Divided by Total Units sold, times 100.
Straight forward right?
In Q4 of 2025, sony sold 74.6 million units in total, that is both Digital and Physical units.
But the "85% of all games bought are digital" has a HUGE skew to it. Why? Because there are THOUSANDS of DIGITAL only games that do not get a PHYSICAL release. Think the 5$-20$ indie titles or digital only ports of older games.
