We recently shared some concerning news here on RoXolid Productions regarding the PlayStation 5, the PlayStation 4, and the massive red flags surrounding a rumored "always-on" internet connection requirement. If you caught our recent Short, you know we discussed the terrifying prospect that the March 2026 update would force players to check in online every 30 days just to verify the digital licenses of the games they already paid for.

Well, according to recent reports, it looks like Sony has—maybe, almost, sort of—realized the massive mistake they were making. But is this actually a victory for game ownership, or just a temporary retreat? Let's dive into it.

The Walkback: What is Sony Actually Doing?
According to a recent report from IGN, PlayStation has finally broken its silence regarding the massive DRM (Digital Rights Management) drama from last week.

Sony has officially clarified that they are implementing a one-time online check-in to confirm a digital game's license. After that initial ping to the server, PlayStation claims no further check-ins are required. Players can theoretically continue to access and play their purchased games as usual without experiencing any offline interruptions.

Why are they doing this? It is widely believed that this DRM check is being implemented to combat a specific type of refund fraud. Scammers have been buying a digital game, downloading it to their console, immediately taking the system offline, and then requesting a refund from the PlayStation Store. By staying offline, they keep the game locally while getting their money back.

Why I am Still Extremely Skeptical
While combating piracy and theft is understandable, the media's reaction to this is incredibly frustrating. The IGN article casually mentions, "Ultimately, it doesn't seem like this will cause too many headaches. Most players are already connected online."

That argument is completely irrelevant! It entirely misses the point. As a self-proclaimed dinosaur who will always champion physical media over digital downloads, the core issue is that Sony thought they could casually implement a recurring 30-day verification system in the first place.

If someone pulls that refund scam, the moment their console connects to the internet again, it should flag the invalid license anyway. Forcing sweeping DRM changes on legitimate, paying customers is a massive overreach.

Remember E3 2013?
Let’s not forget history. Back in 2013, Xbox announced a highly controversial and confusing DRM strategy for the Xbox One that required a 24-hour check-in. The backlash was nuclear. Sony immediately capitalized on it by releasing that legendary, cheeky video showing how "easy" it was to share games on the PS4 by simply handing a physical disc to a friend.

If this new policy is truly just a one-time check-in, then yes, it is a step in the right direction compared to the 30-day rumor. But my genuine concern is that this is merely a temporary reversal. Corporations test the waters all the time. I fear this is just a strategic delay, and that an all-digital, always-online, "you own nothing" future is exactly where they intend to wind up eventually.

Are you buying Sony's explanation, or do you think this is just a temporary pause on a much stricter DRM rollout? Does this push you even further toward buying physical games?
