We recently discussed the incredibly frustrating news that Sony is actively removing over 500 different Studio Canal titles from their digital movie selections through the PlayStation 5 storefront. I brought up the harsh reality that when it comes to digital content, you rarely—if ever—actually own what you are buying. You are essentially paying for an extended rental that can be revoked at any time. So, that begs a very important question here on RoXolid Productions: in what specific instances would I ever actually buy a video game digitally instead of securing a real, tangible physical copy?
Well, if you take a look at the storefront up above me, you can see that the massive 2026 Summer Sale is currently live on the Nintendo Switch and the brand new Nintendo Switch 2 eShop. Let us take a deep dive into what different digital offerings they have available in there to see if it is actually something we may want to consider picking up, or if we should just stick to hunting down physical cartridges for our collection.
For starters, we have an absolute masterpiece, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild for the Switch 2, currently on sale for over $20 off! It is sitting at $48.99 versus the standard $69.99 retail price. And then there is the upgrade pack for existing Switch customers. If they want to play the enhanced version on their new Switch 2 and actually own the digital upgrade versus just accessing it through the Switch Online service, it is on sale for 30% off, priced at $6.99 versus $9.99. Honestly, even at that discounted upgrade price, I would still highly recommend buying The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild physically so it can safely sit on your shelf forever.
Above and beyond the Zelda deals, the eShop has titles like Monster Hunter Stories, Fire Emblem, Hades 2, the original Hades, and Red Dead Redemption all on sale for 50% off at $24.99 versus $49.99. That is definitely not a terrible deal for that caliber of gaming! Dark Souls Remastered is also sitting at 50% off. For the kids—and I know my two daughters would absolutely love this one—they have the Switch 2 version of Hello Kitty Island Adventure marked down to $30 versus the normal $50. Mario and Rabbids Sparks of Hope has seen a massive price cut from $89.99 all the way down to $22.49, though that is still one I would personally pick up physically instead. Disney Illusion Island is normally $29.99, on sale for $20.99. Again, physical all the way for me on that one!
But as we keep scrolling down the list, you have NBA 2K26 Slam Edition on sale for only $15.99. That is a massive 80% off! You know, for just 16 bucks for an annual sports title, that might actually be something worth considering digitally. Assassin's Creed is $99.65 normally; I would never spend that much on a digital release. Marvel Maximum Collection is on sale for 15% off, which is not a great deal. Pac-Man World Re-Pac is decent at $20.99. But here is the one that caught my eye: Marvel Cosmic Invasion is on sale for 25% off. It is normally $30, on sale for $22.49. This is a genuinely fantastic game, and at that price, I would seriously consider pulling the trigger on the digital version. Star Wars Outlaws Gold Edition is in the sale, but I have seen the physical copy for about $35 as well, so I would pass here.
Taking a look at the rest of these digital titles, there is not a whole lot here that is incredibly compelling. Astroneer is on sale for 75% off, and you have a few others for 35 to 50% off. There are certainly deals to be had during this 2026 Summer Sale. Are they the absolute greatest deals of all time? Probably not. You can save some money going digital, but always remember: you can lose access to your digital content.
