The TurboGrafx-16 (and its Japanese counterpart, the PC Engine / CoreGrafx) boasts one of the most underrated 16-bit video game libraries of all time. While finding original hardware can be tough and expensive, Hyperkin recently released the Retron GX, a modern clone console that outputs via HDMI. It natively outputs at 720p, which looks fine on modern TVs, but we wanted to see what happens when we push it to the absolute limit.
In this video on RoXolid Productions, we are taking the 720p output of the Retron GX and running it through the Pixel FX Morph 4K to upscale the signal into glorious Ultra HD.

Testing Retro Classics in 4K
Bonk's Adventure: First up is the definitive TG16 mascot platformer! Does anyone else think the animations in Bonk feel like a perfect mix of Charlie Brown and Calvin and Hobbes? One quick hardware note: the Retron GX natively outputs somewhat oversaturated, reddish-orange colors. That color saturation is baked into the console itself, so don't blame the Morph 4K for the intense reds!
Fantasy Zone: A game so incredibly popular from Sega that it had to be ported over to the TurboGrafx-16. This classic "cute 'em up" is vibrant, fast-paced, and looks incredibly crisp upscaled to 4K.
Hardware & Zero Lag Performance
One of the best features of the Retron GX is its controller flexibility. Not only does it support original TurboGrafx-16 controllers, but you can also plug in USB controllers—including the fantastic pads from the TurboGrafx-16 Mini!
If you are worried about video scalers ruining your retro experience, don't be. Running this clone console through the Pixel FX Morph 4K introduces absolutely zero lag or latency, ensuring these classic, twitch-heavy retro games remain perfectly playable.

Make sure you adjust your YouTube playback settings to 4K to get the best possible look at this footage! We are capturing this experiment using a MacBook Neo to see how well the system handles 4K retro gameplay. Dialing in this new hardware capture process is a crucial step as we transition our long-standing video editing workflow away from Vegas Movie Studio and begin mastering Premiere. So far, taking a 720p system and blowing it up to 4K is proving to be a massive success!
