The recent events after the Impeachment hearings and subsequent acquittal of President Trump has left me stunned and shaped a songwriting session I just finished. The funny thing is, even though I felt that the impeachment trial was futile and I was not happy that they even were happening because as inappropriate as Trump's call to the Ukraine was in the first place, those types of shenanigans go on all the time behind closed doors on both sides, Democratic and Republican. Politics and government dealings are a dirty thing after all. Did Trump's actions rise to the legal definition of "high crimes and misdemeanors"??? I do not know, that is for constitutional experts to decide but one thing I knew for sure is that there is nothing that politicians love to do more than attack each other publicly or hold hearings to demean the other side and lift themselves up. This kind of thing is much easier than taking care of issues we have. Flint Michigan is still reeling from the lead problem in their water and huge sections of Louisiana is still reeling from Katrina that happened 15 years ago but the powers that be would rather spend tax dollars trying to dismantle each other's in a public "holier that you are" display of self aggrandizement.
So, yes, I was not for the impeachment proceedings in the first place because it was a huge wast of time and money but ironically, Trumps vindictive reaction to the impeachment hearing is in an of itself a larger more substantial reason to impeach him. By retaliating against key witnesses who testified at the hearings by firing them, the United States visa vie Trump's administration looks like a Banana republic.
President Trump without cause or explanation, other than a vague tweet, fired Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman and U.S. Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland as well as Vindman's brother, Lt. Col Yevgeny Vindman (apparently for merely being the brother of the A. Vindman??).
This now called "Friday night massacre" makes Nixon ordering hush money to witnesses look like small potatoes. Those witnesses were complying to subpoenas by giving in their eyes and hearts truthful testimony about what they viewed as Presidential misconduct and in so doing should of been protected. If they are given the ax for such testimony that retaliation, in my mind, easily rises to the level of a high crime or misdemeanor. Does Trump want to be impeached. It certainly seems so.
So this situation has impacted a recent songwriting session. The song in embryo is called "Orange Sky"-
