Madison Township, Indiana -A baby deer was swept downstream in rapidly rising floodwaters while firefighters were already responding to a water rescue on North Mann Road, and this is one of those stories that reminds people what real public service looks like. It also reminds people of some law enforcement's love for animals.
Shortly after 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 27th, 2026, the @madisontwpfiredept says crews were dispatched to the 13000 block of North Mann Road for a reported water rescue. First-arriving units found a vehicle in the water with one person still inside. Officials say the driver was able to make it back to land without help from firefighters, but the danger on that flooded roadway was not over.
While crews were clearing the scene, firefighters heard a baby deer being carried downstream in the fast-moving water. Captain Joe Sinclair got into the water and brought the deer safely back to shore. Medics on scene then provided aid until the deer could be transferred to a local animal rescue.
That small life mattered in the middle of a dangerous flood response. These firefighters were there for the person in the vehicle, and when they realized an animal was also in trouble, they did not look away. They acted.
At the time of the department’s post, North Mann Road remained underwater and impassable. Officials are reminding drivers not to drive through flooded roadways because water can be deeper and faster-moving than it appears. If you see water over the road, turn around, don’t drown.
