Solving the wave equation using the coordinate method

We solve the wave PDE using the coordinate method, which consists of defining clever coordinates and then using the chain rule to transform our partial differential equation into one that is much easier to solve. This is similar to u substitution where the integral becomes greatly simplified, to the point that we are left with a simple PDE that we can integrate. The question is though how to find the coordinates, hmmm!!
