Types of second order PDE
We present the three types of second-order constant coefficient partial differential equations: elliptic PDE (like Laplace's equation), parabolic PDE (like the heat/diffusion equation), and hyperbolic PDE (like the wave equation). Interestingly, the classification depends on the discriminant D = b^2-4ac which is the same one as for the quadratic formula and looks just like conic sections.
