The Soltam M71 howitzer is a 155 mm 39 caliber towed howitzer manufactured by Israeli company Soltam Systems. The M-71 is capable of firing a 43.7 kilogram (96 lb) high-explosive shell up to a maximum range of 23.5 kilometers (14.6 mi) at a muzzle velocity of 820 meters per second.
The Philippines’ recent M-71 acquisition was a result of Israeli defense company Elbit Systems’ winning bid to supply and deliver 12 units of M71 howitzers and munition to the Philippine Army and the Philippine Marine Corps where a contract was signed with the Department of National Defense in 2015. Elbit Systems’ submitted bid amount was Php 410,849,184.00.
Delivery of the M-71 howitzers was divided into 2 batches. Delivery of the first 3 units arrived in Manila in the last week of April 2017, while the remaining 9 units were delivered in the following months.
