I’m going on a solo adventure through the Cebu slum, which is considered to be the worst slum in that area of the Philippines.
Lapu-Lapu City, Mactan, located in Cebu, is known for its poverty, overpopulation, and high crime rates. The poverty has worsened since Super Typhoon Odette, known internationally as Typhoon Rai, hit Cebu and other Philippines islands in December 2021, leaving people without homes and shelter. Despite the challenges faced by its residents, the community is slowly recovering and the people have remained friendly and hospitable. In this video, I take you on a solo journey through the narrow streets of Cebu to show you the real-life experiences of the locals from this island.
I walk through the streets of Cebu alone and encounter poor neighborhoods and destroyed houses (yet expensive cars), but the community is very friendly and welcoming. I talk to the locals about their experiences, their day-to-day life, and how their lives have been affected by the typhoon and other natural disasters that have happened in the area.
I hope in this video I have managed to accurately show the positive aspects of the community, such as its kindness and solicitude. The Filipino culture, once again, has made me feel welcome, included and is foreigner friendly. It was heartbreaking for me to hear about the unfortunate circumstances they’ve been put through due to Super Typhoon Odette.
Join me on this humbling and eye-opening adventure through the Cebu slum as we shed light on the reality of poverty and the resilience of the locals in the Philippines. This video is not only an exploration of a unique community but also a tribute to the strength and determination of these people.
