I’m going inside the most dangerous hood in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, with the highest crime rate. I saw homelessness, poverty, slums, ghettos, women and children without basic stuff, rubbish, trash and litter everywhere, people being pulled over by the police, terrible sanitation, kids playing by the polluted canal and more.
However, the areas most affected by crime in Phnom Penh as of 2025 - Steung Meanchey and Boeng Salang also have some good parts and the contrast between the wealthy and the poor is huge. You could see expensive vehicles and guarded properties next to slums by the canal. Above all, the locals, Khmer people, have shown me kindness, generosity and hospitality that I did not expect, even in the deprived neighborhoods.
Even though so far these areas of Phnom Penh in Cambodia have experienced the highest number of crimes and are being described as - 'This is the kind of established slum where centres get broken into, things get stolen, and drug and alcohol related crimes are rampant. It's the underbelly of Phnom Penh where criminals run to when there's a police chase.' - I believe these areas (as well as everywhere in Phnom Penh) are on the rise and on the way to getting better. Despite the comments of people calling these places Cambodia’s ghetto and slums, I visited them with an open mind, and would join the locals tasting Khmer food as well as beers for the Cambodian and Khmer New Year celebrations.
