This video is the second in a nine part introduction to the discipline of Software Configuration Management (CM), highlighting its role in maintaining system consistency through a controlled repository of all components.
This video provides an overview of the Planning phase that occurs after initial requirements are gathered, coming from a background of over 20 years experience in Configuration Management.
The central focus is on defining the architecture and making critical technical decisions before any code is written, emphasizing that most systems do not operate in isolation.
We explain the need to define technical requirements, such as data storage, hardware needs, and necessary programming tools, which augment the initial user requirements. This phase also involves creating time-boxes (sprints or phases) by grouping atomic requirements to organize the development order and establishing a project plan timeline that tracks progress, ideally with developer input.
Ultimately, the planning phase solidifies the technical foundation and prepares the project for the upcoming development phase.
