tl;dr: he has the big hp and lots of scary moves
Twitter is bad, don't follow me: twitter.com/JimsOnlyTweet1
Rules:
- This is a low level run of zombero's hardtype mod: romhacking.net/hacks/3299
- The aim is to keep XP gain as low as possible without affecting my sanity.
- Hard mode, obviously
- No stat boosting items
- All other game mechanics are fair game!
Hardtype changes:
- HP: 16000 → 27777
- His regular attack now inflicts mute, with a seemingly 100% success rate
- He now has Silent Prayer (Acts as Dekaja and Dekunda rolled into one)
- Tarukaja/Makakaja → Heat Riser (Raises all stats 2 stages. He does still have Tarukaja but I only saw him use it once in 3 hours of attempts, for all intents and purposes this has replaced both buffs)
- He no longer has Holy Wrath
The big one. After the relative disappointment of the Beelzebub fight it was nice to have one that truly tested my limits, even if it did keep me up late on Christmas Eve. Having anticipated what a nightmare this would be I started planning my team for this well in advance (I fused that Hanuman before the Black Frost fight with this one in mind.)
So what's new? In the first phase he disregards Dekaja and Dekunda and instead fires off Silent Prayer at an alarming rate. I keep a buff and debuff up at all times to minimise the likelihood of double Megidolaon. Tarukaja or Cadenza are the buffs of choice to maximise damage and get through it quickly - if he does use Megidolaon twice then Rakukaja isn't gonna save us anyway. Rakukaja and War Cry would be the safest way to get through this part but I already ditched War Cry on Demi, and besides, dying here is not a common problem.
Once the second phase hits he starts using the terrifying Heat Riser almost every round. I minimise his stats whenever necessary and buff mine with the new Luster Candy item. The gems for these can be farmed with Lucky Tickets (flashbacks to DDS2 lootboxes) although it's a slow and tedious process. Hopefully this batch will tide me over through the Diet Building at the very least. Money is no longer an issue at this point in the game thanks to the ludicrous bank you can make in Hell's Vault. I debated whether to go with Dekaja or double Debilitate here, since on paper Dekaja is the better option for this part. However, it's essential that he's fully debuffed when the 3rd phase hits, so keeping his stats down in advance prevents immediate wipes during the transition. Also, he's more likely to ruin your day with Dekajas of his own if you don't stick debuffs on him, and we really don't want to be burning through Luster Candies that fast.
And then there's the final phase. At this point Metatron busts out Fire of RNG most rounds which threatens a kill with 3 hits on a single party member, or just 2 hits if he precedes it with Heat Riser/Dekunda. The only small mercy is that he calms down a little with the buffs giving you more opportunities to pummel him. Most of my wipes were here, and even in this run you get a taster of how badly things can go wrong, but I do finally prevail.
So that's the fight. Debuff like hell, exploit his ice... uh, neutrality, and keep Demi focused so you can land those tasty crits if he gets frozen. In terms of Magatama, I actually think it would be better to go with phys resistance and throw Tetraja stones for Mahamaon to stop surprise crits ruining your day, but I might still want to bag Divine Shot so I stuck with Nirvana.
