SMC U42 42" ceiling fan in antique brass. This time I opted to remove the light kit; the cap used I think is Evergo but is the right style and general vibe to suit. It's just hard to get the right size globe for a 42" fan with the typical fitter, so I wanted to show it without. This video should've been up a few weeks back, but when I put the fan up, the bearings were so locked up that low speed stalled, and running them for awhile did nothing. I'm on a roll lately doing things I wouldn't normally do, so I replaced the bearings! SMC used a lot of absolute garbage open bearings that collected debris and dried out easily, I opted for sealed replacements that should fare better. This thing is still noisy as can be, which I tried to see if I could improve at all when I had it open, but didn't really find much success. The way these motors are designed, the actual rotor portion doesn't offer a lot of precision with the install. It kind of just sits in the shell, as opposed to a lot of spinner motor designs that sandwich it between the top and bottom shells, so I think this one might just be a little off the center it should be on. Honestly, it was kind of a great motor design for servicing, but perhaps not so great for QC. That aside, these UFO motors are pretty decent performers, and this guy in particular seems to fly on high speed. Solid airflow for a hugger, especially in the smaller size category. Wish it wasn't so noisy, but I was at least thrilled with the bearing replacement.
