pannenkoek2012 | SM64 - Vanish Cap Under the Moat (and Cap Switch Pressed) - 0x A Presses @pannenkoek2012 | Uploaded 9 years ago | Updated 1 hour ago
I collect the red coin star in the Vanish Cap Under the Moat and press the vanish cap switch using 0 A presses. This video is TAS.
This video is an improvement from my previous video in which I did this in 1 A press. You can find that video here: http://youtu.be/1-g8vj6ERjE. Since then, I discovered a way to press the vanish cap switch without having to press A. You see, originally we theorized that the switch may have a misalignment on it. However, the vertical distance from the ground to the top of the switch is 247 units, which is too high for a dive recover + misalignment, because that can only ascend 207 units. Nevertheless, when I went to test it, I discovered that the base of the switch is its own surface with its own misalignment. The ascent onto the base is 72 units, and the ascent from there onto the top is 175 units, both of which are less than 207, and so they are clearable using misalignments. In other words, by using the base as an intermediate surface, we can use both surfaces' misalignments to get onto the top of the switch.
If you don't know what a misalignment is, it works like this. The walls of the switch push Mario outwards, but these walls are misaligned with the top at one corner. Therefore, Mario can go into this 1x1 unit misalignment, allowing him to get under the top without being pushed away by the walls. The floor then clips Mario upwards onto it.
