I complete the level Bowser in the Fire Sea while also collecting the red coin star using 1 A press. The A press is to jump off of the pole (right before the elevator) the first time.

This video is an improvement from my previous video in which I collected this star in 2 A presses. You can find that video here: http://youtu.be/2NHvFb4Mziw. Since then, I discovered that I could bring fake bob-ombs down to the pole, and use clones to avoid the second A press that would normally be needed to jump off of the pole after dropping down to collect the red coin under the elevator. Specifically, I use clones to place a flame at the top of the pole, since Mario's "flame bounce" from touching the flame is enough to jump off of the pole onto the surface.

Note that I first place several goombas (using transport cloning so as to not touch them prematurely), so that I can be in the correct location when releasing the flame. I use 3 goombas for bouncing, and 1 goomba for its knock back. Formulating this exact strategy took over a week and many revisions to the original plan. Earlier revisions of the plan included:
• dropping down to collect the red coin, and then immediately bouncing back up on a goomba clone (scrapped since a goomba cannot be placed that low)
• dropping off the pole onto 2 goomba clones, and bouncing onto the surface (scrapped since a goomba cannot be placed low enough for the initial bounce, and transport cloning wouldn't work since the goombas don't walk into the correct location)
• using the flame bounce, and placing the flame by having a first flame clone displace the second flame clone (scrapped since the second flame couldn't be placed correctly - releasing with Z made it too low, and releasing with B didn't allow enough it to be placed close enough to the pole)
Not to mention, testing each strategy was tedious, since each clone required a trip to the lone bob-omb, and each flame clone runs out after only a second or two.

I also clone the star instead of actually climbing up to collect it, since that would require additional A presses. ​
