Ever want to just have a moment to reflect in the space of your mind? The slow lead lines played here are the introduction to a new song that I'm working on. I have always loved how David Gilmour can lead you to sit back in your seat to prepare you for what is about to happen. It is a similar intention I have here.
I write guitar-centric music that draws from rock, funk, jazz, soul, blues, and fusion. All of my songs are recorded in a home studio, where they are also mixed and mastered. This video is the second in a new series where I reconfigure some of my songs and re-release them as fresh ideas. Its not re-packaging. Rather, its transforming a song into something completely new.
In these reconfigurations I make the song less guitar-centric and focus instead on bringing out other potentials in the music that lean towards simplicity, vibe consistency, mood suggestion, or just general genre change. This involves substantial production changes and the re-writing of key musical ideas.
I call it the RECUT series, and this is the RECUT version of Kick it like Luco.
This song is about the existential conditions of the creative act, though I’m cautious of what the term ‘existential’ does in this description. For to describe this as an existential analysis of creativity would be like saying that one is going to offer a water analysis of swimming. I suppose its purpose is to alert the listener that the song isn’t about a creative act in particular or even a method of creating something. Rather, it is about the act of creation at its most abstracted level of lived operation.
I say abstract, but not on all points. As it happens, in our analysis we are guided once again by our old friend, Luco. So, the existential analysis is of Luco’s experience rather than that of a universal creativity.
As we saw in the original version of Kick it like Luco, Luco is in perfect synchrony with the world with regard to the timing of things. He experiences a life where he feels always connected to the movement of the world—but important too—his self is nourished and developed in the process. So, one might say that there is a perfect union between the movement of the world and the drive of Luco. In our current song, Luco is telling us that he is also enjoys this synchrony in his artistic pursuits. Lucky Luco. But I suppose we needn’t be surprised.
Luco lets us see his philosophical approach to the act of creation.
One can certainly find the relevance of philosophy here puzzling: When things are rendered down to the most explicit terms of the matter, at the end of the day what we really all want to do is sit down and play something that makes us feel attuned to something beyond. Or write something that blooms enough life that it can carry us away. Or paint something that reveals new light.
That is evident enough, yet equally, and quite often, painfully clear is that playing, painting, writing, dancing etc isn’t sufficient in itself for bridging that connection between our acts and their echoes in the world. We seek inspiration and then fail to find it. When we do find inspiration, it can lead us too far from the world and thus what we produce seems to have no meaningful place in the world-body of artistic space. So, although it may be clear what we want, how to get it is elusive.
The question is raised: How we can be more in touch with inspiration so that we produce a link to something greater with our acts— something that does have a meaningful place.
I personally can’t hear a clear answer in what Luco tells us, but perhaps I shouldn’t expect a fine point on such a murky, impossible question. What is clear to me is that Luco gives us at least a hope for an answer. For just as he lives his life in perfect synchrony with the world, in his creative pursuits Luco enjoys a perfect relationship between his creations and the world. Indeed, I believe I hear him suggesting that he is most in synch during creative acts, and it is the acts themselves that foster the bond that he enjoys in his life more generally. To my mind, then, what Luco shows us is that the central goal is to produce something that perfectly expresses its intention while also being bonded with the world. Lucky Luco indeed.

This wont be the most popular song Ive ever released, but it will always carry a personal meaning for me. The song is pretty experimental, and I think of it as a song where my style is being pushed to something new. The song can be heard as a blend of the elements that make up my last single, Castle of Renfora the Eighth, an older, funky release called The Sound of Time, and a much older, very experimental song called Shiny New Spoons. Ive been increasingly incorporating progressive elements into my songwriting, and that influence is more obvious in this song. Even if the tune isnt your cup of tea, stick around for the groove breakdown at 2:20 and wait for the release around the 3:00 mark. I live for that tension.
