Sleep is without a doubt the strongest status condition in competitive pokemon as it can completely shut down an opposing pokemon for at least one full turn, effectively turning the matchup into a temporary 5-6. in smogon competitive singles, sleep has always been somewhat balanced out by the sleep clause, which prevents you from putting multiple opposing pokemon to sleep at the same time. however in gen 9, the sleep clause has proven to not be enough to keep sleep in check and has thus been banned as a whole, which hasn’t happened since gen 5. So why did sleep get banned and how will this impact the meta?
