The hard rock-heavy metal band Guns n’ Roses was formed in 1985. They got their name from L.A. Guns needing a new member and signed on vocalist Axl Rose. Slash (real name Saul Hudson born in Hampstead, England) is a British-American musician and songwriter who became lead guitarist for Guns n’ Roses and is considered one of the greatest guitarists in rock history. His father was an artist creating LP covers including for David Bowie and Neil Young, while his mother was an African-American costume designer. He was given the nickname "Slash" by US character actor Seymour Cassel because he was "always in a hurry, zipping around from one thing to another,” The group’s debut album, Appetite for Destruction (1987) was the best-selling debut LP of all time in the U.S. on the strength of the Top 10 singles "Welcome to the Jungle", "Paradise City", and "Sweet Child o' Mine". As a result of their rowdy and rebellious behaviour, Guns N' Roses quickly received the moniker "Most Dangerous Band in the World." In contrast, American country music singer, songwriter, guitarist and actor Randy Travis (real name Randy Bruce Traywick) has recorded 20 studio albums since 1978 and charted more than 50 singles on the Billboard Hot Country charts, including 16 that reached No. 1. Travis broke through in the mid-1980s with the release of Storms of Life, establishing him as a major force in the neo-traditional country movement. Travis’ second album was Always & Forever released in 1987 which accounted for four No. 1 singles. Swedish pop-rock band Europe was formed in 1979, rose to international fame in the 1980s with their third album, 1986's The Final Countdown with Journey producer Kevin Elson, and it has sold over 3 million copies in the US and 15 million copies worldwide.
