Skate or Die for c64 by Electronic Arts, loaded from Tape
First of all, this is the PAL version, because that is whta I have - I do realise this is an NTSC game originally.
What's interesting about this one, is being an American game it was very much designed around disk. Various companies handled this in various ways - usually by making the game more linear, reducing the presentation, or both - at some point I'm going to do a full tape longplay of Activisions labyrinth, which is a game I played a lot from tape as a kid, where they removed all of the backtracking and save/load from a large adventure game. Skate or die, though, too a differnet approach - the approach it has taken, is make it the users responsibility to note that tape counter locations of each event.
For six events, this is not super unworkable, in truth - obviously, you need to compete all once, but once you have them.... well, it actually kind of works out. Of course, the loading time for each event.... isn't super great.
Also, "rewind tape" kind of means "to the start"... it actually says in the manual that it means to the title screen point, but yeah, still.... not great. This is.... definetly worse than something like turbo outrun, because at least you get a significant game there, whereas this is loading minigames - but they take _all of ram_. Whee!
I actually was going to play all of the events, but I lost patience waiting for loading to happen, so this is what you get..... of course, this is what I used to test a new capture method, so I hope it works because I'm sure as hell not doing this one again for a while ;).
