Sammy Hagar the red rocker says that Van Halen got rejected by Big time producers and the critics until they put out RIGHT NOW in the early 90s. Everyone Dissed them as a Party Band until Eddie Van Halen and Sammy wrote this classic. Interivew with the Red Rocker who just recently changed the lyrics to this song to celebrate 250 years of America.

It’s time for another episode of our series Evolution. On this show, we tell the story of a band’s career through 5 defining tracks. Together these songs will to take you from the beginning to the end of a band’s journey and showcase the evolution of their sound and artistic direction. Today we’re covering one of my favorite bands EVER: the hard-rocking, mighty Van Halen. Comprised of the great Eddie Van Halen on guitar, his brother Alex on drums, Michael Anthony on bass, and for scope of this video, Sammy Hagar taking on the role of frontman. I figured for Van Halen we would do 2 different evolution episodes to cover each frontman equally.

Okay so let’s set the stage. Between 1978 and 1982, Van Halen released five Top 20 albums in the US… Van Halen, Van Halen II, Women and Children First, Fair Warning, and Diver Down. Four of these would go to #6 or better. And all would reach multi-platinum status. Climbing higher with each entry, Van Halen was poised to BLAST their name and Unique musicianship into the stratosphere with their next LP. And they did not disappoint. Van Halen’s 6th album, 1984, released in 1984, shot to #2 on the Billboard 200. The album 1984 would sell over 12 million copies. And the lead-off single Jump would score Van Halen their one and only #1 hit.

Jump also got to #1 on the US Rock charts, and internationally it broke into the Top 10 in at least 15 countries. This was definitely one of the defining tracks of the 80s. Then after Jump, Van Halen turned in two consecutive #13 hits… I’ll Wait and Panama. A fourth single Hot for Teacher stalled at #56 but ruled MTV.
