Walking through a graveyard one night, on their way home from rehearsals, Joy Division Bernard Sumner had a message for the band’s frontman Ian Curtis. Pointing to the tombstones Sumner said, “Imagine what it would be like to see your name on one of them.” A bit morbid, but the guitarist/keyboardist was trying to scare some sense into his friend. The reason for this after-hours stroll through the cemetery was that Ian, who suffered from chronic depression, had attempted to take his own life multiple times.
Once, when he was really drunk, he chopped himself up with a kitchen knife. And more recently on April 6, 1980, Curtis attempted an overdose… only stopping because he didn’t think he had enough pills to finish the job.
