On March 6, 2025, independent journalist Melissa Siljanovski and community advocate Dan Shook faced an unprecedented ruling in the Campbell County General Sessions Court presided over by Judge Bill Jones.
This video documents the legal arguments surrounding a 5-year extension of an order of protection sought by LaFollette Police Officer Anthony Mahar. Our defense attorney, Elizabeth Burrell, submits a formal legal memorandum establishing that journalistic video updates published to social media platforms are intended strictly for public consumption, do not constitute direct or indirect personal contact, and are fundamentally protected by the First Amendment.
Despite these clear constitutional protections, Judge Jones issued a sweeping 5-year extension, declaring that any future public commentary regarding the officer would be done at the reporter's "own peril."
