Signalis is a sci-fi based horror game that's like a mix of Blade Runner and Silent Hill put into a cosmic horror blend, tied into a love story that creates the emotional pull needed to get you invested in it's story. It's been on my list for some time, but I am ultimately mixed on the game. In terms of it's story, world, atmosphere, artstyle and music, it's amazing. One of the best I've experienced in a game that has pretty much an infinite pool of possibilities and theories to the events that unfolded. But the gameplay side of it is unfortunately something I could not get into.
It plays like a Survival Horror game from the 90s, but also does it in a way that annoyed me to a point where I became detached from the gameplay altogether. It's not bad, but it's not great either and the pacing never really changes between the main three areas you go in, turning some of the things that I tolerate in Survival Horror games into an even bigger chore than it needs to be. I'm glad I finished the game, but I'm also glad to move on from it and see what other survival horror games bring to the table.
I look forward to seeing what rose engine does next, but I would like to see improvements in the gameplay and pacing department.
Notes:
- Turns out there was no grenade launcher. It's tied to the flare gun as an alternate round. My bad.
