This is a midi that I composed at myolden's request for his Alien Vendetta tribute, Infernal Legions. It's an homage to Map 25 - Demonic Hordes, which uses Lee Jackson's infamous midi "You Suck" from Rise of the Triad".
Myolden specifically asked for a "remix" which is not something I've ever really done before. "You Suck" is pretty iconic - normally intended for ROTT's game over screen, it's a very short song but is a good fit for Demonic Hordes' gameplay all the same. Lee Jackson is a bit of a god tier composer as far as I'm concerned, whereas I'm only JUST beginning to accept thinking of myself as a composer and not just "some guy screwing around in Sekaiju" so I was pretty intimidated by the task, but up for the challenge.
I started by listening to "You Suck" to identify what specifically is notable about it. The various layers of strings, the percussion, and the bells were all things that stood out to me, so I wanted to incorporate them in my homage. The main string melody of "You Suck" is pretty iconic, but it's also a bit repetitive, so I tried to think of ways to invoke it without it becoming too grating.
Also notable was the build into a crescendo before walking back down the scale for the song to start over. This was a good opportunity to infuse something new, so I incorporated a similar element but used it as a chance to transition into a new part and infuse the song with some more ideas. Overall, I tried to make the song ebb and flow, building and releasing to mirror the tension a player was likely to experience in a big slaughter map. I wanted the player to feel a sense of determination against the Infernal Legion, a battering ram of sorts (hence the title "Siegebreaker") against insurmountable odds that only persistence can overcome.
Myolden ended up loving it, and I'm pretty proud of how this one turned out.
