I went to Shanghai's Auto Show 2025, to see what China has in store for the world. To be fair, there were many car brands there from all over the world-- but our curiosity is on the Chinese EV sector.
I remember when Tesla was first introduced as a viable electric car in the Canadian market. There were questions about it's battery life, it's reliability, it's range, but in the end, Tesla became a viable brand for every day city driving. They started popping up everywhere, it was sort of a symbol of success and forward thinking. People were impressed with it's accelaration, and it looked sleek and cool.
Fast forward to today, Tesla is somewhat of a hated brand-- and more interestingly, China's BYD (Build Your Dreams) has surpassed Tesla in both sales and technology. What an interesting turn of events!
We were surprised at the Shanghai Auto Show to see SO MANY Chinese brands selling new, modern and sleek elevtric vehicles. The list is long: BYD, Denza, Yangwang, Zeeker, Hongq and many more. I really liked the Haval truck, and we even saw Chinese motorhomes and motorcycles. It was an impressive auto show, all around.
Sidenote: Is there a growing RV / Motorhome culture in China? It makes sense... the country is massive, the landscape is beautiful, and the roads are in good shape. We dream of bringing our motorhome to China one day for a cross country roadtrip. Right now that's still a loafty goal with many uncertanties. (what's the best way to bring a vehicle from Canada to China? Ship it to Portugal and drive the rest of the way, or just ship it straight to China?) But, the nature of loafty dreams tells me, maybe if we keep working, keep growing our channel, and China's RV culture (dumping stations, RV parks, etc) keeps growing... maybe we can Build Our Dream. Zing!)
What stood out a lot was Huawei. Most people in the west might not even realize Huawei makes cars. Further-- not only cars but the world-leading driverless technology. The tech is so good that in new, electric Audi's, the Huawei system is used. It seems like China is almost an entire world in and of itself... it you've never been, you don't know what you're missing/ capable of.
We also saw many concept cars of varying awesomeness. The Lotus Theory 1 was pretty impressive. Imagine driving a car from the center cockpit!
It's interesting to wonder what the future of the automotive industry will look like. One thing seems certain: China will play a big role in it!
