On Monday, October 17, leaders of She’s the First, a nonprofit organization that champions the education of girls globally, visited the New York Stock Exchange and rang the Closing Bell to highlight their achievements and promote their upcoming Mentor Breakfast on November 17.
She’s the First believes a girl with an education is unstoppable. Their program equips girls in low-income countries with the tools to overcome the obstacles that keep 50 million girls out of secondary school worldwide. The organization was founded, originally as a simple YouTube video campaign, seven years ago by Tibbetts and Brandt. Today, She’s the First has raised more than $3.5 million dollars, supporting 804 Scholars across 11 countries, as well as a campus chapter program spanning 216 high schools and colleges. Attending the Closing Bell was Founder/CEO Tammy Tibbetts and Co-Founder/CPO Christen Brandt, with She’s the First staff. She’s the First Board Chair Gwen Greene of JPMorgan and Vice Chair Tom Kerns were there with Board Director Maureen Mitchell, President, Global Sales & Marketing, for GE Asset Management. This event also marks the beginning of a Board Director terms for Jennifer Simon, SVP of Business+Social Purpose at Edelman and Andrea Lontoc, National Programs Manager at CBS EcoMedia. Advisory Panel members Chanel Cathey, Director of Corporate Communications at Viacom, Amy Schoenberger, VP of Social Strategy for MBooth, and Leslie Zaikis, were also there.
The Closing Bell starts the one month countdown until the organization's biggest event of the year, the Mentor Breakfast, which celebrates the organization’s impact, honors distinguished supporters, and raises critical operating funds. It will be held at 52 Broadway on November 17 at 8am. This year, web TV host Marie Forleo will be honored as Mentor of the Year; Bethany Lampland and Morgan McCray of the New York Foundling will be honored as Mentorship Duo of the Year for launching the Adopt a Cause initiative; and She’s the First Scholar Ellie Kaaya from Tanzania is the Mentee of the Year for work she has done as a community leader.
