REVIEW (Part 5 - Continued from last video description) -
The re-traversal of the game is made worse with the lack of fast travel points. There 2 types of save stations. The Misu save points that are ball shapes allow you to fill up your energy refill tanks, enter the shop, and are a fast travel point. The crystal save point allow you save and transport back to the last Misu save point only. I wish they were all Misu save points, especially the crystal ones that are right by boss fights, where you can’t refill your Health refills upon death. So, if you want to refill them, you make the journey from the last Misu point. Just an unnecessary waste of time and bad decision making from the devs. Just as the lack of fast travel points waste the player’s time. When I just wanted to go to one small area to check something out, sometimes I would have to run for ages. It’s especially annoying if you go there and realise you will need to come back with another ability later.
Also worth noting is the day and night mechanic. This isn’t explained at all throughout the game and I just noticed it at some point during play. There didn’t seem to be any reason in it except to change the graphics. Until I took a long journey through a treacherous part to arrive at a large closed flower made out of gemstone. I couldn’t do anything with it so I had to leave the area wondering what I needed to come back with. For some reason I turned back around again to check it out again because it couldn’t be nothing. When I arrived, a large dragon appeared. I killed it for a special item. I figured out that it was because I came back at night and I was right. It’s a bit annoying that this isn’t explained to you and any other instanced like this where an enemy only appears at night, means you have to wait a long time or come back at the right time, just to see the enemy. That’s another waste of my time. At least give me the ability to turn day into night.
So, it sounds like I don’t like this game. I do, honestly. I love it. I can’t get enough of the exploration and am engrossed for hours at a time and do not want to put it down. I want to explore every nook and cranny and am obsessed with filling up the map.
I would just make some changes. The game is too long. It didn’t need to be this big. We’re talking about 50 hours if you want to explore everything, but more if you want to do the extra challenges (boss time trials, Maze high scores etc). The Pacman mechanic shouldn’t have been included. It only serves to add variety, not quality. My heart shouldn’t sing at seeing the Maze sections.
The difficulty is as high as it gets for 2D platformers. It forces everyone to play at the same high level without any difficulty settings. The bosses can be get shockingly hard at times. What it copies from Metroidvania games, it does excellently. What it adds to make itself different, it misses the bar.
Still a bloody brilliant game. Like the last Metroidvania game I played – Metroid Prime 4. The game is filled with so many problems, but the bits that it does right (mainly the exploration) are so good that it overrides the negative points.
