REVIEW (Part 2 - Continued from last video description) -
You can also transform into a mech briefly which is useful against bosses. This can take a good chunk of the boss’s health while basically being invincible. The mech is slow so its not so good against agile bosses, but if the boss doesn’t move much, then it’s a godsend. The only trouble with it, that once you use it, you need wait for a very long time for it to charge to be ready to use again. This prevented me from using it throughout the game anywhere near as much as I wanted because you never know how long it’s going to be when a boss appears (sometimes it can be frequent, as there are lots of minibosses). I made the mistake of going into battle while using my mech not long prior and it’s definitely not worth waiting for it to charge. It could be 20 minutes. I wasn’t going to make that mistake again so I didn’t use it outside of boss fights unless I needed it to get through a wall. A lot of the time I would go for hours without using it because I didn’t know there was no bosses around.
There is another mechanic that the mech gives to the game. When you defeat an enemy, it sticks around for a few seconds before disappearing. This gives you the chance to grab the enemy and ingest it with a ghostly version of the mech. As it a ghost, you can summon it at any time, as long as you have a little bit of special metre (for special moves). When you do this, you convert the body into items. These items can be used as ingredients to buy upgrades. If you don’t have some of the ingredients, you can’t buy the upgrades. Most enemies hold different items so you really need to “swallow” all enemy types. There are dozens of these items to collect and you have no idea which will be useful. This leads to action being slowed down as you stop to swallow dead bodies after each encounter. It’s not a fun mechanic. There are some enemies that are hidden and can disappear, so you need to kill them quickly as they hold a main item, which can’t be mass farmed. If you miss the item, you need to leave the area, to respawn them. On one particular enemy, when you get close to it, it just buries itself into the floor and is gone. So, the way I would kill it was to throw a bomb a couple, which uses a lot of special metre. Sometimes my special metre would deplete, so when I went to ingest the enemy for the special item, my mech would not appear until my special metre filled up in which time, the enemy was long gone. This was infuriating and it could have easily been solved by not using special metre for the grab. It doesn’t add anything to the game. This also happened a lot when fighting multiple enemies in battle rooms. I wanted to ingest rewards, but was unable because my special bar was depleted. That’s metre should have been solely been used for special attacks, not rolls and grabs too.
Now we need to talk about Pacman, or Puck. He doesn’t really add much to the gameplay. The only time you control him are when rail appear on the walls, floor, or celling. This is the only time you control him, and touching the rails forces you to transform into him. You can attack and jump. This mechanic is OK. I certainly wouldn’t miss it if it wasn’t there. But it is the main draw to the game which makes this game different to any other Metroidvania. You can either choose him to move forward automatically like the original game, or control his movement manually so he stops when you let go of the analogue stick. The latter is the better option for the main game as you need to stop a lot to avoid enemies. The automatic option is best for the Mazes. Yes, we actually get to play mazes in the guise of bonus rooms hidden very well throughout the game. There is one hidden per area and they take a lot of exploration to find. But, every time I find one, my heart sinks.
