REVIEW (Part 1) -
This is a very typical Metroidvania but with the game mechanic of being followed by a Pacman. Yes, THE Pacman, although he is called Puck (which was actually the original name until the American publishers warned the Japanese against it because the kids would graffiti the arcade cabinets with an ‘F’)
The game is set in a Sci-fi setting where there are lots of nods to classic Namco arcade games like Galaxians (an alien race), Xevious (a planet), and of course, Pacman. Non-of these characters exist in their own game universes, rather the names are used in this Sci-fi setting. Even Puck is a robot.
The action is generic (which is no bad thing) where your character uses a sword, and then later is given abilities that are seen later in the game such as roll, double jump, hookshot, slide. So, you really aren’t very agile until the 3rd quarter of the game because new abilities are only unlocked through beating the main bosses in the main quest. The reason the main bosses appear so infrequently is because the game is huge. I mean, really massive. I was impressed by how big Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown was, as it was by far the biggest Metroidvania I have played, but I think this is even bigger!
The game doesn’t really encourage you to explore early on as you know you haven’t got the abilities to truly go off on a wander. This leads to a bit of balancing issues. I found that I was just following the main quests, as one would for a good while and some bosses got extremely challenging. But I just wanted to get as many abilities as possible so I could go exploring properly. I was right to do so as most of the good powerups are blocked behind abilities that need to be earned. So up until I got the good abilities, I was struggling with a pitiful amount of health. When I got to a certain boss, the Red Ghost, the difficulty ramped up so much it was like fighting the final boss. I really felt the panic as it was such a long fight so I was proud of myself, but it shouldn’t have been so hard. After that, I felt I had enough abilities to stop going for the main quest and explore the map. Don’t get me wrong, I was still exploring each map as much as I could during the main quests, but I might have missed one or 2 branches which ended up being massive areas. Especially since I didn’t have the abilities at the time. I wasn’t going to go around the whole map every time I earned a new ability. It’s too big for multiple runs.
When I did go for a big explore, I was able to at least quadruple my health count. This would have made that last damn boss so much easier. The health tanks are so infrequent when you don’t have all of the abilities, so your damned if you prioritise the main story because you are weak, and your damned if you don’t because you can’t get anything anyway.
The other moves that you can earn are special moves called ESP. These come extremely infrequently also. These are basically special attacks that use your special metre. This special metre runs out so quickly that it slows down the pacing of the game. The problem is, your dodge roll also uses special metre, so once the metre runs out, you can’t dodge again until the metre has filled up fully again, extremely slowly. You can increase the length of the metre through the course of the game, but that doesn’t speed up the automatic fill up, so really, it can’t change the way you would fight a boss because you have to the wait for the metre to recharge anyway. I found that the safest way to beat a boss was to not use the special moves at all because if your run out of metre, you are signing your own death warrant as you can’t dodge. If the roll didn’t use special metre (which no other game does anyway), I would have used specials more.
