For my amazing dancer best friend's birthday, I sewed and then dyed a silk wrap skirt for her to wear for ballet! Yes, I made a modern thing for once. The skirt was cut out of a single piece of silk, plus bias strips for the top binding and ties, hemmed, and the binding sewn on. It was dyed with fiber-reactive dyes (you can use them on silk as well as cotton!) and a technique that produces organic, abstract crackle patterns. I had to re-size an existing pattern and change the shape of the hem because ballet dancers aren't all tiny stick people, and clothing makers don't seem to realize that . . .
