Philip Miller, and sung by kids. More relevant today than it's ever been. No matter how you look, what background you come from, where you live, or what religion you follow, underneath we're all the same and should be treated equally. Some of the video was filmed in Playground #2 at the Peter Cooper Village housing complex in the Gramercy section of Manhattan, New York.
NOTE: For more than 20 years, I've been Sally Sunshine online. It's just who I am. In real life, I've always gone out of my way to find the beauty and joy in this sometimes bleak world of ours. I just can't function if I dwell on darkness. But, make no mistake, I'm also not wearing blinders. I've been horrified and deeply saddened by what's happening down south (I'm in Canada) and equally uplifted by the world's reactions. This particular powder keg has been set to blow for a very long time and it's about darn time. Personally, I refuse to drag politics onto this site, my Happy Place, but if you're offended by the words Black Lives Matter, then you need to move along, you're in the wrong place.
In 1969, when this show we love hit the airwaves, who was the very first person we met? Actor Matt Robinson as Gordon, a science teacher. Think about that for a minute. You think the streets are raging today? Look up 1969 in your history books, kids. A young (in his early 30s), educated black man with a good job was a rare sight on US TV screens. The Top 30 was awash in very "white" shows ("The Brady Bunch", "Here's Lucy", "The Doris Day Show", "The Beverly Hillbillies", "Hee Haw"), with some new additions inching in there: "The Mod Squad", "Julia", and "The Bill Cosby Show" (loathed now, he was a trailblazer back then), and "Room 222" would be joining them shortly.
For a show that wanted to reach the inner-city kids that were slipping through the cracks, they didn't hold up a mirror and show them how awful the world was at the time, they showed them a picture of what they could aspire to achieve in this same world instead. 51 years later and it seems people still need a reminder.
Finally, I promise I'll continue to share videos with no agenda attached, other than entertaining and maybe distracting you for a few minutes from the real world. I'm not kidding myself. I'm not changing history or saving lives here, just doing what I can to find and share these little rays of joy. I truly hope it helps (heart emoji YT won't let me post)
