ILoveLanguages! | SEMITIC: ARABIC & MALTESE @ilovelanguages0124 | Uploaded October 2024 | Updated October 2024, 16 hours ago.
Welcome to my channel! This is Andy from I love languages. Let's learn different languages/dialects together.
Arabic is a Central Semitic language of the Afroasiatic family, mainly spoken in the Arab world. There are 32 varieties of Arabic, including Modern Standard Arabic, derived from Classical Arabic. Western linguists distinguish between Modern Standard and Classical Arabic, but Arabic speakers typically do not. Arabic is the third most widespread official language after English and French and is one of the six official languages of the United Nations.
Maltese is a Semitic language derived from medieval Sicilian Arabic with significant Romance influences. The Maltese people speak it and is the national language of Malta, as well as the only official Semitic and Afroasiatic language in the European Union. Originating from Siculo-Arabic, a Maghrebi Arabic dialect, it evolved independently following the Norman invasion of Malta, undergoing a process of Latinisation. Unlike other Arabic varieties, Maltese has no diglossic relationship with Classical or Modern Standard Arabic. Its morphology has been deeply influenced by Romance languages, particularly Italian and Sicilian.
This video is created for educational, language awareness, and language preservation purposes. It aims to provide valuable insights and knowledge to viewers, enhancing their understanding and appreciation of different languages and their unique characteristics. By raising awareness about linguistic diversity, the video seeks to foster a greater respect and recognition for various languages, particularly those that are endangered or underrepresented. Additionally, it contributes to the preservation of languages by documenting and sharing linguistic knowledge, thus ensuring that these languages and their cultural heritage are not lost to future generations.
