Phoenician, an extinct Canaanite Semitic language, was originally spoken around Tyre and Sidon. Due to extensive trade and commercial dominance, Phoenician became a lingua franca of the maritime Mediterranean during the Iron Age. The Phoenician alphabet spread to Greece and became the foundation of all modern European scripts. Phoenician is similar to Biblical Hebrew and other Canaanite languages, and in its early stages, it was mutually intelligible with them.
Geʽez, also known as Classical Ethiopic, is an ancient South Semitic language from Ethiopia and Eritrea. It is currently used as the main liturgical language by several churches, including the Eritrean and Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Churches, and the Ethiopian and Eritrean Catholic Churches, as well as the Beta Israel Jewish community. Studies show that Tigre has a 71% lexical similarity to Geʽez, Tigrinya 68%, and Amharic 62%. Most linguists believe Geʽez did not evolve directly into modern Ethio-Semitic languages but split early from an unattested common ancestor.
