The Happiest Day of my Life
Okay so it might not have been THE happiest day but it is one that stands out for sure.
Many years ago when I used to surf all the time, I went to a spot called "Grandma's" on the south shore. Summer time is when the waves hit that side of the island and on this particular day, it wasn't that great. I arrived at about 2pm, took out my 6'10" Kazuma egg and played around that spot for a few hours. After a while, my then-coworker and friend Johnny paddled out. I was happy to see him. We got along great and always shared stories and cracked jokes while waiting for waves. That it is also known as being "in between sets".
We surfed our little hearts out until we were dehydrated and exhausted. Mind you, the waves were not that good. The wind was slightly on-shore which muddied their shapes and the tide was a bit high. At about 5:30, we decided to call it quits and paddled in. By then, pretty much everyone on the beach had left. Nobody really sticks around when things are crappy.
Johnny and I sat on the sand, drank water and talked for a bit. The traffic adjacent the beach was abysmal so waiting was a good idea. The two of us were just staring off into the distance when it happened and by it, I mean that the wind changed direction, the swell started building...and the tide was lowering. The sun was also getting pretty low.
"Holy shit! Look at that!" Johnny professed.
I swiftly responded with "Let's get back out there while there's no one!"
Both of us tanked more water and even though our muscles screamed no, we decided to paddle back out with a vengeance. The wind completely died. The ocean was glass. The waves before us looked they were out of a perfect painting and were were screaming our asses off.
I was up first. Johnny was a bit behind as he wanted to wax up his board a first. I arrived at the spot where the waves were breaking but didn't make the first wave which was about 2-3 feet (4-6 foot face). The second wave of the set was a solid 3-4 (6-8 foot face) which was perfect.
I paddled hard and took off a little late. The wave held up and when I pulled in...oh my god, I got barreled! I got barreled in a golden sunset illuminated masterpiece of a wave. Johnny, screaming his head off at me. That was the most epic wave ever. After I jumped off, I saw Johnny having the exact same experience. We each got one wave and that was enough. That one wave filled our hearts...and our souls.
