Creative Cat Productions | Sega verses Nintendo during the Christmas of 1991 @creativecatproductions | Uploaded December 2021 | Updated October 2024, 1 day ago.
It’s been 30 years since the 1991 Christmas sales season, which was more or less the official beginning of the epic console war between the Sega Genesis and the Super Nintendo.
The Sega Genesis had been out for a couple of disappointing years at this point, but new Sega of America president Tom Kalinske quickly turned the tide of battle by dropping the price of the Sega Genesis and including the brand new hit game, Sonic the Hedgehog, with every console as the pack-in game. Suddenly interest in the Genesis began to pick up, but the timing couldn’t be more difficult for SEGA because 1991 was also the year that Nintendo launched their Super Nintendo in North America, which came with a copy of Super Mario World….arguably the best game of the year. It was an exciting time to be a gamer and it wasn’t obvious that Nintendo was equipped to easily overcome the Sega Genesis in the same manner that the NES had overcome Master System. It was anyone’s contest.
But which console was actually better in 1991? That is to say, which console really had the best games on the store shelves that fateful Christmas shopping season? Join us, Creative Cat Productions, as we explore 11 different categories of games from 1991 to find out which console was really the best.
