Creative Cat Productions | Toshihiro Nagoshi’s legacy at SEGA and his recent departure both raise interesting questions @creativecatproductions | Uploaded February 2022 | Updated October 2024, 1 day ago.
I fixed the audio! For the most part.
Toshihiro Nagoshi has been with SEGA since 1989 and, after Yu Suzuki, is easily the company's greatest game developer. In the past he was known for his contributions to some of SEGA's greatest racing games, but in recent years he's the main man behind the acclaimed Yakuza series. Without Nagoshi, it's no exaggeration to suggest that SEGA would be virtually irrelevant as a contemporary console game developer....and yet that's exactly the scenario SEGA is facing today.
Recently Nagoshi was stolen away from SEGA-Sammy to make games for the Chinese tech firm, Netease, a company most famous for generating large amounts of knock off shovelware for mobile devices. Why in the world would Nagoshi want to do that, after 30 years with an established brand, and just a few years before retirement?
Further, many of us have long wondered about Nagoshi's strange demeanor and fashion sense....coupled with his apparent interest in the Yakuza. Why the Yakuza? Why did he devote nearly 20 years of his career romanticizing Japan's organized criminal sub-culture? Whatever the reason, Nagoshi is easily among the most intriguing figures in the game industry today. He's hardly at ease in the world of geeky fandom, with that wolf-like countenance of his, and yet he's also been a part of some of the most recognizable and celebrated SEGA games of the 21st century. That contrast is hard not to love.
Thanks for watching dudes!
