How can we, as a society, stop climate change? What can we do personally about climate change? And how can we handle eco-anxiety?

Seeing the Upsides in Climate Change: Giving Meaning to Our World and Drafting the Pathway to a Better One - a discussion and Q&A

The debate on climate protection is mostly held in a very linear and binary manner: either you are in favour of more and more drastic climate protection, or you are against it. At the same time, the debate is very focused on the reduction of greenhouse gases.

In his climate work, Tim Riedel has tried to overcome this narrowness and polarity of discussion, as it limits and impedes the search for more substantial and more widely accepted solutions. He even tries – as the title suggests – to look at the problem from a systemic perspective: Why is it happening to us? To what extent is Climate Change perhaps not the problem, but only a symptom, hinting us to look at the real problem at a deeper level? And if so, can we perhaps even see it as also having a positive side to it? Is the impending Climate Collapse offering us an opportunity to transform the world to be as we would want it to be, if we dared to dream bigger? Then we should take this opportunity and turn our “fight against Global Warming” into a positive “battle for a better life on a better planet”.

The Webinar Series "WTF is Going On? Finding Meaning in Our Chaotic World" is an attempt to navigate the confusion, to make sense out of the madness, and to find meaning in what seems like chaos. The following is an extract from a webinar in which Tim addressed these questions:

1) What can I do as a normal citizen and as a climate activist for a better life for humankind? Why has it been so difficult so far to change our societies, how can we now accelerate the transformation, and what can I contribute?

2) How can I prepare and balance myself mentally and emotionally so that I can face climate change and do something about it without spoiling my joy of life? How can I remain hopeful and positive despite the daily doomsday reports?

Tim is a trained Social Scientist and Lawyer from Berlin, Germany. Having run his own HR consultancy and worked as a systemic trainer and coach for almost 20 years, he quit his job in April this year in order to dedicate his career to saving the planet now. To start this out, he has written and published a series of articles outlining eight perspectives on climate change:

1. “It's a fact” - The Scientific View

2. “It scares me” – Between Climate Fear and Climate Hysteria

3. “Time to act” – Here are the solutions to reverse Climate Change

4. “It's too late” – The Climate Apocalypse is coming anyway

5. “We are having the wrong conversation” – The solution is beyond Climate Activism

6. “It's the economy, stupid!” - The business case and the “free-rider dilemma” in Climate Protection

7. “The Climate Change Conspiracy” – Tracing the ideological foundations of Climate Change Denialism

8. “The absurdity of a double life” – Reframing the relevance of individual Climate Action

On the basis of these eight perspectives, he analyzes how we ourselves have become entangled in a seemingly unsolvable climate dilemma, and how climate activists are in fact contributing to stabilizing the problem.

WTF Is Going On? is a webinar series hosted by Gwyneth Jones (www.gwynethjones.coach), who writes, facilitates and coaches around deep adaptation, connection to nature, and emotional intelligence (to name a few things).
