A WRETCHED death, contested funeral and desecrated grave; that was the fate of Edward VI’s remains. In this Tudor history documentary from History Calling I’ll tell you all about the death and the funeral of Edward VI (including why it was delayed and why his sister, Mary I, wasn’t happy with the service), plus where Edward VI is buried, what was found inside Edward VI’s tomb when it was opened up by the Victorians, what Edward VI’s body told onlookers about his manner of death when they saw it, why Edward VI’s grave was opened and what Edward VI’s coffin looks like. I’ll also explain why Edward VI doesn’t have a monument which will entail looking at what the Cromwellians did to Westminster Abbey in the 1640s.
The life of Edward VI was very short, for the death of the last Tudor King occurred on 6 July 1553 at Greenwich Palace when he was only 15 years old, while the funeral of Edward VI occurred on 8 August after his Catholic sister Mary had decided how on earth to go about burying her Protestant brother. This episode will take you from those events all the way up to the 20th century and the alterations made to the altar which now sits over Edward VI’s final resting place in the Chapel of Henry VII in Westminster Abbey, where he rests near his sisters, Mary I and Elizabeth I and their grandparents, Henry VII and Elizabeth of York.
I’ll show you old photographs and pictures of Westminster Abbey, inside and out, including of the chapel in which so many of the Tudors are buried and tell you what was written on a scroll of lead found next to the remains of Henry VIII and Jane Seymour’s son and why the Victorians thought that their intrusion into the tomb was not the first time Edward Tudor had been moved.
