Let’s look at the Wars of the Roses from start to finish. This is one of the names given to a conflict between two branches of the ruling Plantagenet family in 15th century England, the Yorks and the Plantagenets. It is also sometimes called the Cousins’ War. In this medieval royal history documentary from History Calling, we go back to the beginning, to the sons of Edward III and Philippa of Hainault and their offspring. We then look at the usurpation of Richard II by his cousin, Henry Bolingbroke, who became Henry IV and who was a son of John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster (thus the name given to one of the branches of the family). Next we’ll go through how the crown descended to Henry VI and why his distant cousin, Richard, Duke of York (descendant of two other sons of Edward III) thought he had a better claim and how the situation deteriorated until Richard was dead and Henry was deposed by York’s son, Edward IV. You’ll hear about the struggles of Henry’s formidable wife, Margaret of Anjou, to get the throne back for her husband and son, the brief success she had before both men were killed, the story of the Princes in the Tower and of course, the rise of the Tudors in the person of Henry VII, helped along by his mother, Lady Margaret Beaufort. I’ll also explain why the Wars of the Roses were called that and who won the Wars of the Roses.
