The Alaskan Way Viaduct that walled off downtown from Elliott Bay for 60+ years is gone, replaced by a 20-acre park system including the elevated Overlook Walk (opened October 2024) and rebuilt Pier 58 (opened July 2025).

๐ ABOUT SEATTLE'S WATERFRONT
โโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโ
For over 60 years, the double-decker Alaskan Way Viaduct (1953โ2019) walled off downtown Seattle from Elliott Bay. After the 2001 Nisqually earthquake exposed its vulnerability, the city replaced it with a deep-bored tunnel and demolished the viaduct in 2019. What rose in its place is the 20-acre Waterfront Park โ Seattle's largest civic project since the 1962 World's Fair. The rebuilt Pier 62 opened in 2020, the elevated Overlook Walk connecting Pike Place Market to the waterfront opened in October 2024, and Pier 58 reopened in July 2025 โ just weeks before this walk was filmed. Pike Place Market itself has been operating continuously since 1907.
