We don’t know this woman’s backstory at all, whether she was young or old, her culture or clan. Some in our Bible study thought perhaps she was the woman who had committed adultery and was forgiven privately by Jesus after everyone had left (John 8:11).
Maybe!
We really have no information on her at all but what is given in this text.
Back in 591 A.D. Pope Gregory preached an Easter sermon in which he combined the stories of Mary the Magdalene with Mary of Bethany and the woman in this story, which then gave Mary of Magdala the reputation of being a repentant prostitute or a promiscuous woman.
But, if you read the passage carefully you see this is not the same event as when Mary of Bethany anointed Jesus at Simon the Leper’s house. And the woman in this story is also not Mary Magdalene, who had been released from seven spirits in a miraculous healing.
The woman in this story had lived a sinful life was most likely a prostitute. At the very least, she had a reputation. Whatever her growing up story, there were traumas and soul wounds. Then she met Jesus.
Before we get started with this woman’s story, I’d like to say her traditional title of “the sinful woman” is very misleading. In this story, she is portrayed as the devoted-to-Jesus woman, the forgiven-by-Jesus woman, the living-portrait-of-love-sacrifice-and-bold-faith woman.
Her sinful past was only noted by the Pharisee sitting next to Jesus.
To Jesus, she was one who loved much, and he received her.
So, I’d like to reframe her story as
I The Forthcoming Woman, Luke 7:36-38
II The Favored Woman, Luke 7:39-43
III The Faithful Woman, Luke 7:44-47
IV The Forgiven Woman, Luke 7:48-50

![1 Peter 3, Do not Fear?
#1Peter3 #Suffering #CrossoftheBeliever
Writing from his prison cell, Peter deeply empathized with the believers spread throughout the Jewish Diaspora, for he, too, was exiled from his home, he was also enduring abuse, persecution, and the prospect of a grim execution. He understood what it meant to live out an authentic faith, a transformed life, in the public and hostile gaze of an unbelieving world.
The ink in his quill was metaphorically drawn from his own suffering and sacrifice.
Therefore, first Peter wrote of the practical, daily ways believers can live the Word, and now Peter would write about how to suffer well, to suffer nobly in the power of the Spirit of Christ, taking the example of Christ, and in a very real way, experiencing Christ’s own life.

![Introduction to the Gospel of John
#GospelofJohn #IntroductiontoJohn #JohnsGospel #ApostleJohn #JohntheElder
Originally delivered on a Sunday at New Hope Chapel, Arnold MD, this talk is in a series for the Gospel of John at our church. I am one of four members on the pulpit teaching team there our church website is https://www.newhopechapel.org/
I always wanted to be on a jury, but the few times I ever made it into the pool, I never got selected. My husband was able to serve a few times, though, and one of the things he was instructed to do was to weigh the evidence put before the jury, then come up with a verdict on just the reasonable testimony of eyewitnesses plus whatever physical evidence was brought in.
This idea of bringing in eyewitnesses and physical evidence is something of the way the apostle John approached his gospel, as well. John was asking his audience to hear testimony, examine evidence, and come to a conclusion about Jesus of Nazareth—is he the Christ, the Son of God? And for those who had put their faith in Jesus, is Jesus able to shepherd you through the trials of life?
So first, we will call in John’s evidence: seven witnesses, seven claims, and seven signs. Then we’ll consider John’s confession that Jesus is God, and we’ll finish with the two responses John presents.
I Consideration: 7 Witness, 7 Claims, 7 Signs
Through eyewitnesses, testimony, and physical evidence, John proves Jesus is the prophesied Messiah and Lord.
II Confession: Jesus is Messiah, God the Son
John, along with the teaching of the apostles, shows Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God
III Conclusion: Yes or No?
Knowing the truth about Jesus requires a response
