Scriabin's Sonata No 2 in G# minor Opus 19, in 2 movements Andante and Presto (7:48) also called Sonata Fantaisie, was composed between 1892 and 1897. Apparently it gave Scriabin much trouble, I suspect because he had planned a standard four movement sonata, but could not come up with satisfactory material, hence "sonata fantasy."
He provided a program for the piece: "the influence of the sea...the first movement represents the quiet of the southern night on the seashore; the development is the dark agitations of the deep sea. The E major middle section shows caressing moonlight coming after the first darkness of night. The second movement, presto, represents the vast expanse of ocean stormily agitated." Interesting that he not yet seen the ocean.
