Happy Monday! At least I think it's Monday.
So it's been exactly one month since we got a major update on the production of Scream 5, or the Scream reboot if you will, but definitely not 5cream (five-cream) yuck!
With that update, we were provided with an official announcement of the co-directors, Radio Silence Productions' duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who came out with last years banger, Ready or Not. We also learned that Scream writer/creator Kevin Williamson would be coming on board as an executive producer, after all sources initially told us he was to have no part in the production. Sneaky, sneaky. Oh yeah, and the movie was to start filming in May, like this May, 1 month from now.
So that filming start date is definitely not going to happen now, because of the sad state of the world. But how exactly were they to start filming in such a short time when we haven't even heard about a writer, a script, or a cast? Obviously they would need to have all of the above, unless Matt and Tyler like to fly by the seat of their pants. And since it takes like a bazillion years to write a script, all signs indicate that they must already have one. But why did we never hear about this? Because Kevin Williamson already wrote it a decade ago. Sneaky, sneaky indeed.
So, if that's the case, Williamson will be pulling double duty as producer and writer, and you can bet your top dollar that Neve, Courteney, and David are all coming back, as the rumors suggest. Perhaps in a lesser capacity, but that's too soon to say.
With Williamson's proposed trilogy of 4, 5, and 6, we should be seeing a continuation from Scream 4 (2011), which has been repurposed to make sense with the ending of that film, which is now canon. Williamson never intended to end the film with the hospital scene and Jill's death, and she was in fact supposed to survive the movie with everyone being fooled into thinking she was the new Sidney Prescott, only his script ended on the cliffhanger with the mystery that there was another female survivor, which could have either been Sidney or Kirby (Hayden Panettiere).
Given the fact that Wes Craven purposefully left Kirby's fate up in the air, and knowing that Williamson's original ending had her possibly surviving, it is believed that the story for Scream 5 and 6 would have centered around Kirby, with suspecting that the true killer is still at large, but not realizing it was Jill.
Of course since Jill is dead, which seems irrefutable, there will be a new killer(s), and if the brief plot description we got about a "woman returning to her hometown to try to find out who has been committing a series of vicious crimes", we might be able to extrapolate that Kirby is the woman in question.
Of course I can be totally wrong, and I will own that if and when it is disproven. But until then, tell me where the cast and writer are? Because I suspect they are a lot farther along than they appear to be.
