I keep all my off-cuts of wood if I think that they can be useful for something. The shelf has become a bit of a mess with so much on there and I decided to use some up to make a bowl.
They don't need to be the same thickness, but the closer they are is better as it saves work. The main work comes with working out how to place them and just sanding the edges square on the bench sander.
Gluing these up with ordinary PVA glue, holding in place for 15 seconds and allowing then 20-30 minutes to set before turning.
There is a whole mixture of wood being used here which include Oak, Sapele, Beech, Padauk, Mahogany and Teak. Did I miss any?
Turning is nice and easy with very little tear out.
Thsi was finished off using the Briwax Dark Oak. This is ideal to fill in and gaps, grain and make the piece look aged. This wax needs little buffing, the lathe just needs to be on a slow speed to buff, get it too hot and you just pull the wax away.
