Due to an agricultural crisis beginning in 1927 and with preludes in the 1920s in general, many farmers were at risk of losing their livelihoods. Demonstrations took place in numerous towns and cities, and deputations were sent to Berlin to voice grievances against trade and tax policies. Farmers' continuing financial difficulties and dissatisfaction with their own lobby organizations led to more radical protests, especially in the province of Schleswig-Holstein. Passive resistance included tax strikes and the obstruction of foreclosures, but some farmers, with the assistance of nationalist radicals, resorted to terrorist methods. Their flag was black indeed, but with a white plow and a red sword. Their most prominent leader was Claus Heim from the region of Dithmarschen in Schleswig-Holstein, a traditional and traditionally wealthy agricultural hub. Some historians consider the Landvolkbewegung (and the distress the farmers had to endure) to be one of many factors aiding the rise to power of the Nazi regime. But the Landvolk also ended up inspiring many anarchists.

The opera is set in Rome and is based on the life of Cola di Rienzi (1313–1354), a late medieval Italian populist figure who succeeds in outwitting and then defeating the nobles and their followers and in raising the power of the people. Magnanimous at first, he is forced by events to crush the nobles rebellion against the peoples power, but popular opinion changes and even the Church, which had urged him to assert himself, turns against him. In the end the populace burns the Capitol, in which Rienzi and a few adherents have made a last stand.

The author of this very song is unknown, that makes estimating its time of creation difficult as well. It hasnt appeared in older manuscripts, making the 15th century the most probable estimation, but the described way of travelling comes of as sort of Minnesang-esque, and the golden era of Minnesang was around 1150 to 1300. However, you might have seen that this isnt a courtly love song at all! In fact, it is highly erotic, but chooses to somewhat hide that behind metaphors.
