It is one of the largest and most important song collections for German songs of the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance and also features many melodies. The period in which this manuscript was created falls under that of Early Modern High German, a period in the history of German lasting from around 1350 to around 1650.
The author of this very song is unknown, that makes estimating its time of creation difficult as well. It hasnt appeared in older manuscripts, making the 15th century the most probable estimation, but the described way of travelling comes of as sort of Minnesang-esque, and the golden era of Minnesang was around 1150 to 1300. However, you might have seen that this isnt a courtly love song at all! In fact, it is highly erotic, but chooses to somewhat hide that behind metaphors.

Lohengrin, WWV 75, is a Romantic opera in three acts composed and written by Richard Wagner, first performed in 1850. The story of the eponymous character is taken from medieval German romance, notably the Parzival of Wolfram von Eschenbach and its sequel, Lohengrin, written by a different author, itself inspired by the epic of Garin le Loherain. One of the famous carnival songs from Köln/Cologne in the Rhineland, which is the region most famous for its carnival. This song was written in 1936 by Karl Berbuer (1900-1977), a famous artist from Cologne who would also write the equally famous Trizonesien song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=unExncdYD8I) about carnival in the German occupation zone after WW2 in 1948. Both of these songs proved popular well beyond traditional carnival regions and are still performed today.
As you can see, the song was written in the Cologne dialect. The Mülheim boat is the traditional ferry service between the two parts of Cologne, divided by the Rhine. The Drachenfels (Dragon rock) mountain is located to the south of Cologne on the Rhine river, near the city of Bonn. The Blue Riband is an unofficial accolade given to ships that set records for the fastest crossing of the Atlantic Ocean. It used to be a famous competition between companies and countries in the 2nd half of the 19th and the 1st half of the 20th century. The speed of one hundred knots would equal 185 km/h (115 mph), much faster than any ship of that time. Its supposed to be seen as a metaphor for how fun the trip is. The song is the origin of the expression Heidewitzka, used to signify amazement and surprise. Its origins are unknown, some say its a parody of Nazi greetings.
