Happy Halloween! One of the great masterpieces of lieder, Der Erlkönig (The Erlking or Elf King) is also one of the most frightening pieces of classical music ever written! Piano duet transcription by Scott Meek, performed live by The Meeks Duo (Scott Meek and Clare Yuan) for the University of Victoria Emerging Artist Alumni series, Phillip T Young Recital Hall, UVic, Victoria, Canada.

The arrangement is based on Schubert's original score, as well as Franz Liszt's innovative solo piano transcription (especially in the last section, and "My Father!" sections).
The four characters in the original poem by Goethe are represented in different registers and textures, made more pronounced by the 4-hand texture. The narrator's neutral tone is mostly in the middle register (except the climax at the end), the father's calm and reassuring tone is in the bass, the child's fright is represented by the shrill upper register, and the erlking's sweetly alluring tone is in the upper register, mostly in major keys and with light textures.
