When we first bought the property, there used to be a lot of Sassafras Trees. One of those sat right at the front, in the center of the valley.
On a warm spring day, my young daughters came out to have lunch with me.
As we ate, I pointed out that we were sitting beneath a Sassafras tree. I then reached up and broke off one of the branch tips. They were surprised at how pleasant its fragrance was. One of them suggested that we call that spot Sassafras Valley. So, we did.
That tree is one of the few that have survived. But now, it has been taken over by several vines. The largest of which is Poison Ivy. The tree is still alive and relatively healthy considering the circumstances.
This shows my recent attempt to save the Sassafras Valley Namesake Tree.
