On July 5th, 1861 the Civil War was just beginning. At that point, most of the fighting had been at sea. But, the Govenor of Missouri took action that was to bring the battle to land... Right in the heartland of America.
His decision to raise an army of Guardsmen to make Missouri a member of the Confederacy would summon US Army forces to the Carthage Missouri community. Their meeting resulted in what became the largest and longest engagement fought at this time in the "War Between the States".
This video is my understanding of what happened in the community where I have lived for over 60 years. Thanks to numerous sources, I am pleased to share with you what happened.
